Surya Kund, Chhata (Mathura)

History of the site

Suryadev came here to see the pastimes of Lord Krishna that is why it is called Surya Kund. The Kund finds mention in scriptures. The water of Kund is divine & has curative properties. It is believed that disease like leprosy gets cured by taking a dip in this Kund.

In the middle of the Kund, there is a large Island, where there are lots of ancient trees. Thousands of migratory birds come here annually from all over the world.

This Kund is surrounded by several old temples like Bihari Ji Temple, Mukund Madhav Temple, Hanuman Ji’s Bagichi, Narayani Devi’s Temple & Durga Mata’s Temple. Near the Kund, there is an ancient Banyan tree under which several sages have done meditation.

Local folklore is that during the preparation of huge public feasts whenever the organizers fell short of Ghee, the water of the Kund used to be filled like Ghee & once the feast was over same quantity of Ghee used to be offered back into the Kund.

Plight of these sites

Surya Kund is huge and beautiful. It has large turtles and other aquatic creatures. Unfortunately the growth of urban dwellings has forced the people to encroach upon it’s catchments area. The sever nallah also falls into this magnificent kund causing pollution.

Heaps of garbage

Development and Beautification Plan

The Braj Foundation is trying to raise the funds to complete restoration and beautification work. We need about Rs. 4.08 Crores for this project.

On Delhi-Agra road (NH 2), 113 Kms from New Delhi is the town of Chhata. Chhata is very important from the tourist’s point of view because from here one takes a turn to enter the country side to visit famous pilgrimage centers such as Barsana & Goverdhan. Also for tourists going to Agra this place becomes a natural halt.
