Kirti Kund (Barsana)

History of the site

It is said to be the kund of Kirti Rani, mother of Shri Radha Rani.  Kirti Rani used to take her morning bath in this kund along with her maids. Interestingly enough the location of this kund supports this faith because the palace of Raja Vrishbhanu ji , father of Radharani,is located on the nearby hill called Bhanugarh. It is a walking distance from here.

Plight of the site

This kund is lying in the state of neglect for many decades. Dirty drain water is constantly falling into it. The ghats are in shambles and bushes and wild vegetation has engulfed this historic site.

Braj Foundation’s initiative

In the recent past when the restoration work of the neighboring Vrishbhanu Kund was started by the initiative of the CEO of Braj Foundation, efforts were made to take this kund also into our project. Due to the shortage of funds at that point it could not be done.

However our technical team found out that this kund was basically structured to filter the natural flow of water into the bigger Vrishbhanu Kund. As the time passed, clean water turned into dirty drain and the whole system of rain water harvesting and conservation was disturbed.
We could have sorted out financial and technical issues but as mentioned in the history of Vrishbhanu Kund a local person claimed rights over parts of this historic site as a result the legal entanglement delayed the whole process.

Beautification Plan

Once the legal issue is resolved by the UP State archeology Dept. we will take up the de-silting, ghat repair and ornamentation of this kund. We will try to reconnect it’s water system as before with some checks on the quality of inflow of water into it.

Kirti Kund in ruined condition

This historic kund is located next to famous Vrishbhanu Kund in Barsana town of Mathura Dist. This site is 18 kms from NH2 and Chatta Sub Division of Mathura.
